Alternative approaches to engagement and ways to engage 'difficult' people

This course is suitable also for other arts therapists and related professions.
Convenor: Karen Huckvale
Art psychotherapists are frequently asked to work with the ‘hard to engage’. Doing this often means alternative approaches. This course addresses questions like: What are we actually trying to achieve? Why are we trying to engage this particular person? Why are they hard to engage/ difficult? What is the message in not engaging? What does it do to us if we struggle to engage someone? Through a mixture of practical and creative exercises, discussion and presentation this course will explore a variety of approaches which help.

hat’s the Story?
The Sixth Exeter Arts and Therapies Conference, (EATc), Reed Hall, University of Exeter
EATc gatherings look at the 'spaces between' the arts, psychotherapy, society and science. 'Boundary dwelling' between these places often stimulates the most creative approaches. The theme for this year is 'What's the Story'. It will explore the ways that narratives unfold and meaning is created in the arts, therapies, and society, and why story making, memory and meaning making are crucial for emotional, psychological and social well being.
The conference is for:
Participants and presenters from the arts, the arts and health, health and care professionals, therapists, counsellors, teachers, social care workers, students from many disciplines and more. EATc seeks to attract diversity. The events have often contributed to networking between and across different professional groups.
