An introduction to using creative writing with vulnerable adults
This two day workshop led by Briony Goffin has been designed for individuals who work with groups of adults with mental health problems.
It is intended that participants will have a taste of the ‘therapeutic potential’ of creative writing, for themselves and for use with their clients / service users. By the end of the two days they will have a sense of how a creative writing group / experience may be set up and facilitated within their organisation / workplace.
The workshop will comprise of:
· Simple creative writing exercises
· Personal reflection on the writing and sharing process
· Group reflection on the writing and sharing process
The workshop aims to work with the capacity of creative writing to:
· Develop self-expression / self-awareness, through the seeking and discovery of language / written imagery that embodies the individual’s experience.
· Raise self-esteem, in the honouring of the individual’s ‘story’ by giving the writer time to explore, and the space to share, their story.
· Foster mindfulness, in the invitation to the writer to attend the details and sensuality of a given moment or subject matter.
· Support or complement other rehabilitative/enrichment activities as part of an integrated therapeutic programme.
